Dear Parents,
I wanted to send along some news from Suffield as we proceed through the final weeks of the academic year. We are engaged in the many May events as the 2012 commencement rapidly approaches.
Arts and athletic events fill the calendar during the coming weeks. Several teams are headed to postseason play, highlighted by our outstanding softball (17-0) and baseball (11-1) teams. Across the board, the consistent commitment of our athletic teams has been outstanding. The performing arts center has been busy with students displaying their impressive talent. The guitar show was last weekend, and this week brings vocal and instrumental concerts and a theater showcase.
Our seniors have finalized their college decisions with the May 1 deadline now behind us. It has been a successful year for college placement and for our college counseling program. The Hoffman College Counseling Center was formally dedicated on May 4, and our new four-year counseling program has been fully implemented. Our seniors applied to 292 colleges and universities and will enroll at 80 different schools in the fall.
As I mentioned in a previous letter, our admissions results were outstanding. We are excited about the new group that will join us in the fall. We had more than seven applicants for each available space, and students will come to Suffield next year from 22 states and 25 countries.
I am pleased to report that the 2012 Parents' Association Auction was an unprecedented success with net proceeds slightly exceeding $400,000. These funds will help support the construction of new science facilities at Suffield. I want to particularly thank the many auction volunteers and our co-chairs, trustee Susan Autuori P '06, '08, '10, '13 and Mary DeLiso P '13. The event served as another reminder that our work at Suffield is very important and deeply valued by parents. Thank you for again sending this message.
There are many great projects taking place this spring in our Leadership Program. Our sophomores are participating in off-campus community service efforts that include tutoring and mentoring young students in area schools, helping with our local parks and recreation organization, working with an animal rescue facility, and raising awareness of various medical issues.
Our eleventh graders are taking part in an eight-week series of campus-based projects. These include the construction and installation of a solar collector at the Courtney Robinson '88 Outdoor Leadership Center, completion of a greenhouse construction project, and various restoration efforts on areas by Muddy Brook, our disc golf course, and trails on the west side of campus.
Lastly, we recently completed a three-session Senior Seminar program that exposed students to topics of personal financial management (budgeting, credit cards, mortgages), service and philanthropy, and inferential thinking and noticing change. This last seminar was led Mark Teed '75, P'08, '12.
As we look toward the 2012 Commencement activities (on May 24 and 25), I am pleased to mention that Will Sartorius was selected by his classmates as our student speaker. He will be part of a special day that will include remarks by Sir Howard Stringer P '12, Chairman of Sony Corporation and a world-renowned leader in the media and entertainment industries.
Thank you again for your support of Suffield in so many ways. Our school's positive momentum is due in large measure to the strong partnership of our parents.
Sincerely,
Charlie Cahn Headmaster |
