Leadership

Many schools discuss the importance of leadership training, but at Suffield Academy we have fully established programs for all students to develop leadership skills.

The initial areas of emphasis in the Suffield Academy Leadership Program are personal skill-building and group dynamics. We then turn the focus to self-assessment and understanding different leadership styles. Lastly, we underscore the overarching importance of having a significant and positive impact on society. Students in grades 9, 10, and 11 take required year-long leadership courses where the curriculum emphasizes experiential learning and guided self-discovery. The leadership experience at Suffield concludes in the 12th-grade, when every senior holds at least one formal leadership position and presents a personal speech to the community at chapel. During spring term, the future graduates participate in a seminar program that focuses on topics such as financial awareness, digital footprints, and Title IX.

In 2002, Suffield embarked on an ambitious project to bring formal leadership studies to the academic program. The aim of the Leadership Program is to develop human beings with integrity who wish to make a significant and positive impact on society. Our graduates will have the capacity to define and achieve meaningful goals and dreams. We will teach ways of thinking and develop skills, traits, and habits in order to enhance each student’s leadership qualities and capabilities. Core elements of the program include life skills, moral foundation, goal-setting, communication skills, successful problem-solving, self-awareness, and inspiring others.
