Season Outlook
The 2021-2022 riflery team sports an enthusiastic but young group of athletes. Many of our shooters have been involved in the sport for just a year or two. The team looks to see vast improvement from the beginning to the end of the season for each individual shooter and as a team.

Wilbraham 946, Xavier 911, Suffield 907
The riflery team traveled to Blue Trail Range to compete in a tri-meet versus Wilbraham and Xavier. Both teams are traditionally strong programs and today was no exception. Wilbraham won the meet and Xavier took second place. Tony Luo placed first for the Tigers overall with a 186. Brendan Mastella and Robin Su were hot on his heels with 183s. MN Mayalarp scored in his first varsity match with a 179 and Harold Xu finished out the top five with a 176. MN's 179 was a slight increase on his PR. Howard Yu also shot a new PR with a 174.
Suffield travels to Wilbraham's range on Saturday to improve on our first showing of the season.

911-939
The Riflery team went to Wilbraham for an away meet against last year's champions. While Wilbraham won the match 939 to 911, Suffield had some excellent highlights. Brendan Mastella shot a 188, which is an excellent score. Jerry Chen shot a new PR with a 182, which officially placed him on the Varsity team as this was his first time scoring in a match. Finally MN Mayalarp, who officially qualified as Varsity in our first meet of the year, shot his second PR in a row with a 183. The team is developing nicely but has a lot of work to do before the end of the season.

928-947
Suffield hosted Wilbraham at the Hartford Gun Club on Wednesday. While Suffield lost the match 947 to 928, we have a lot to be proud of. First, this is the best team score we have shot all season by sixteen points. Sixteen points is a huge margin in Riflery and it puts us squarely in the running for second or third in the state. Second, Robin Su was medalist in the match with a 192, topping his previous PR by one point. We have not had a medalist in a match versus Wilbraham for several years. Also scoring in the match were Tony Luo with a new PR of 188, Jerry Chen with a new PR of 185, Brendan Mastella with a 182 and MN Mayalarp with a 181. It was a solid match for Suffield that showed how much our hard work in practice is paying off. Many of our shooters are seeing a new PR each week as we move into the championship season.

924-937
After a well needed long weekend, the Varsity Riflery Team was back in action against Xavier. Many of the tigers shot well, including a standout performance by Brendan Mastella. He shot a 192 for a new PR with an amazing 49 out of 50 in standing position. His hard work in standing has obviously paid off as we head into the championship season.
Also scoring PRs for Suffield were Thomas Koester with a 188, and MN Mayalarp with a 184. Robin Su scored a 185 and Jerry Chen finished up the scoring with a 175. We ended the match with a 924, slightly off pace from our season high of 928.
While Suffield did well, Xavier shot their best score of the season with an incredible 937. Suffield will have a chance for a rematch against Xavier in a postal match at the end of this week as we prepare for the all state gallery match and all state championships in the next few weeks.
4-position section
Away
The Riflery team took six shooters to the 4-position national NRA match this weekend. The shooters will be ranked against other shooters of similar age across the country. So far in Connecticut:
Robin Su ranks seventh with a score of 377
Brendan Mastella ranks 9th with a score of 367
Jerry Chen ranks 12th with a score of 358
Thomas Koester ranks 13th with a score of 352
MN Mayalarp ranks 17th with a score of 350
Tony Luo ranks 20th with a score of 349
A perfect score would be a 400.
More shooters will shoot the match throughout this month, so these rankings are subject to change, but it is likely that all of our shooters will stay in the top 30 for the state. Usually there are around 110 shooters total that participate in the match.
This coming Saturday several of our shooters will take on the 3-position NRA national match which is an even harder event. It is a grueling course of fire that takes over two hours. It is exactly the same course of fire as the Olympic athletes shoot.

Gallery Match - Prep School Division
Away
The Connecticut Gallery Match is in its 92nd season. It is one of the oldest matches for smallbore in the country. Suffield Riflery participated in two of the smallbore matches this year. The "senior" match combines shooters from across the state of Connecticut and across all ages. The match is self-sighted so there is no coaching allowed in this match. Athletes must do everything themselves. Last year over 250 shooters participated in the match.
The "junior" match involves only athletes younger than age 20 and allows coaching, but it still involves shooters from all around the state of Connecticut. Last year over 120 shooters participated in the junior match.
Suffield sent one team to compete in the Senior match this year. Brendan Mastella led our team with a score of 188, followed closely by Robin Su with a 186. MN Mayalarp and Tony Luo followed quickly with a pair of 182s. This puts our individuals currently in 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th place in the match. These placements will change as more people shoot in the match through the month of March, but I have hope that Brendan and Robin will stay in the top ten. MN and Tony will most likely move within the top twenty. As a team, their score of 738 put them in second place so far, though some top teams have not shot the match yet. Most likely they will stay within the top five teams to shoot the match.
In the Junior match, Suffield sent three teams.
Comprising the top team, Brendan Mastella again led with a 188 and Robin followed with a 186. Thomas Koester came in with a 184 and MN Mayalarp shot a 182. Brendan and Robin shot the same scores in this match and the senior match, but they shot twice in this day. These scores are not used twice. The team scored a 740 overall out of 800 and is currently in second place. More teams will shoot, but the team should stay in the top five, possibly the top four.
Suffield's second team consisted of Howard Yu (184), Nene Uchiumi (180), Theo Henle (179), and Jenny Choi (179). In this team Howard tied his PR, Theo and Jenny shot new PRs. They had a great showing and are currently fourth with their team score of 722. Jenny shot this match as her first away match and her first shoulder to shoulder match.
The third team consisted of Tony Luo (175), Harold Xu (180), Jerry Chen (183), and James Li (176). The team scored a 714 and is currently in fifth place. For James this was his first away match and first shoulder to shoulder match as well.
Scores and teams will continue to populate through the month of march, but we had strong showings from many of our students and we have great hopes for the newer shooters as they grow through their years in the program.

Members of the riflery team traveled to Blue Trail Range in Wallingford to compete in the Conventional Smallbore Rifle 4 Position sectional match and the Metric Smallbore Rifle 3 Position sectional match over consecutive weekends. These matches are conducted locally around the country as sectionals, then results are combined into a nationwide match. The matches must be shot between January and April, so the full results are not completed yet.
For the 4-position match Brendan Mastella, Robin Su, MN Mayalarp, and Tony Luo formed a four-person team. Thomas Koester and Jerry Chen also shot the match as individuals. Robin led the efforts of the team with a 377 out of a possible 400. Brendan was right behind him with a 367 out of 400. MN shot a 350 and Tony shot a 349. The total team score was a 1443, which places them 6th in the Connecticut rankings so far. Other teams may still be shooting the match, but most of the top teams have shot already.
As individuals Thomas shot a 356 and Jerry shot a 358.
In the 3-position sectional Brendan Mastella, Robin Su, Tony Luo and Jerry Chen shot as a team. The team is currently ranked 3rd in the state sectional, though more teams will still be shooting the match. Scores for this match are out of a possible 600 points. Robin Su shot an excellent 515, Jerry Chen shot a 496, Tony Luo shot a 469 and Brendan Mastella shot a 437. Currently Robin Su is ranked 5th in the state with his score and Jerry Chen is ranked 8th. These rankings are also subject to change as more teams shoot, but I would expect that both will stay within the top 15 shooters in the state. I should also note that the targets for the 3-position match are smaller and more difficult than our usual targets. A scratch 10 on our usual targets is closer to an 8 on these targets. These targets are closer to what the Olympics use for international competition. It's a great challenge for our students to try the harder matches, and they did really well.

Connecticut State Riflery Shoot-Out
Away
The Suffield Riflery team traveled to Blue Trail Range for the Connecticut High School Championships on Wednesday the 22nd. The championships consist of the top team in each conference and two wildcard teams based on average score through the season. Teams traded spots through the day as we shot the five relays. Each relay had only two students from each team making for a long day. As all the relays finished, Suffield emerged 2nd in the field of five with a score of 927. Suffield was led by an excellent performance by Brendan Mastella with a score of 190. Brendan finished fourth in the match overall. Robin Su was right behind with a 187. Freshman James Li scored third for the team as he made his Varsity debut. He scored a 185 for the team. Jerry Chen and Tony Luo finished out the scoring for Suffield with a 183 and a 182 respectively. The match was a bit closer than I would have liked, making the rankings a nail-biter until the end. Suffield scored only one point higher than Xavier who took third place in the state, and three points higher than North Haven High School who earned fourth.
With this season in the books and some of our lead scorers graduating, we turn to a promising JV squad who won the Connecticut JV Riflery season. Many of those shooters will fill the ranks of our Varsity squad next year and help to continue the tradition of excellence that this program has earned.
