The Suffield Riflery squad traveled to Blue Trail Range on Wednesday to face the Xavier shooters. Traveling with a young team, nerves were running high with the early season match. Xavier has an excellent and experienced team this year whereas only three of our ten had placed in a varsity match before. Our youth and inexperience showed as we lost the match 933-871. James Li led our team with a 188, but our next scores were all in the 170s and 160s, which is lower than usual for our team. Naoya Kobayashi, Michael Fang, Wendy Hu, and Amelia Wang all placed in the top five and qualified for Varsity in the match.

In our second away match for the week, Riflery traveled to Wilbraham to face their perennially strong rifle team. Having one match under our belt helped significantly and we fared much better than in our first match of the season. Wendy Hu shot a new PR with a 184 and topped our scoring, followed by James Li with a 183. Amelia Wang shot a new PR with a 180. Michael Fang tied his PR with a 178 and Freshman Jason Liu jumped into varsity with a 176 for the day. Kristian Yan also shot a PR for the day with a 175, but he did not quite make the scoring five. The team score was a 901 which was much better than our previous match. Wilbraham scored a 919, but while this was still a loss our team performed much better as they continue to grow and improve.

Wilbraham traveled to the Hartford Gun Club for our first home match. The match was a great match with all shooters shooting well. Suffield's scoring was led by Jason Liu with a 189 and new PR. He was quickly followed by senior captain Abby Quinby who shot a 187. James Li followed with a 186. Michael Fang shot a 184 and Senior Captain Naoya Kobayashi finished out the scoring with a 183. Amelia Want also shot a 183 for a new PR. Finally, Kristian Yan shot a 181 for a new PR as well.
The team shot our second best score of the season with a 929, but it was not enough today. Wilbraham shot a 930. The top teams all have close scores this year so it will be an excellent final this year.

The Suffield Academy Riflery team traveled to Blue Trail Range for the annual state championship shoot off. This year there were three teams all in close contention, and we knew it would go to the last round. This year the contest was made extra suspenseful because one of the shooting points was disabled during the match, so the last round held one member from each team instead of the customary two at a time. Michael Fang took it upon himself to be the end of the match for Suffield, and his 188 new PR put us over the top for second place. Also scoring in the match were James Li, Abby Quinby, and Wendy Hu with 185s. Amelia Wang rounded out the scoring for Suffield with a 184. We look to build on this core of excellence with a team of solid 185s as a base when we hunt for first place next year.
