On Wednesday [1/11] the alpine ski team hosted the first giant slalom race of the season at Ski Sundown. Despite the lack of natural snow and cold temperatures, we are grateful for snowmaking and the opportunity to compete.
The boys’ alpine team topped the field defeating Taft and Loomis. With his clean, direct line, varsity racer Max Sena-Goldschmidt ’24 posted the fastest overall time out a field of 57 racers. Trailing .02 off the lead, Robby Kurzer ’24 placed 2nd, Max Massoni ’24, and Jake Brook ’25 placed 4th and 7th respectively. Henry Harding ’24 and Brandon Park ’25 also scored for the team. Andrew Pollini ’26 and Jack Clancy ’25 debuted on the varsity and skied two solid runs.
Our girls team is short on numbers and does not qualify for team results, but Izzy Dupere ’24 led the team by finishing 17th overall in the coed race. Lici Hoermann ’24 and Emma Dupere ’26 also scored points for the team, and Elizabeth Cerrato ’25 rounded out our roster.
Will Gaulin ’26, Joe Muslu ’23, and Mauricio Lopez-Adazabal ’24 were our top JV skiers [2, 8, and 9 respectively]. For some athletes it was their first time competing in this discipline. It was a fun and productive day on the slopes and we are looking forward to a great season. Next Wednesday [1/18] Berkshire School will host our varsity and JV teams for a slalom race at Butternut Basin or Catamount [depending on the snow conditions].

The boys’ alpine team topped the field defeating Taft and Berkshire. For the second week in a row, varsity racer Max Sena-Goldschmidt ’24 skied great and was our top finisher. Max placed 2nd [40 racers] behind a very fast independent racer from Hotchkiss. Henry Harding ’24, Brandon Park ’25, and Jake Brook ’25 had an excellent race and scored points for the team on both runs. Robby Kurzer ’24 posted the fastest time for Suffield on the first run and Max Massoni ’24 also skied a swift run. On the second run they both couldn’t keep up with their feet and did not finish. This meant the pressure was on for freshman Andrew Pollini to be our 5th finisher so we would not be penalized. Andrew pulled through with his consistency and scored important points for Suffield.
Our girls' team is short on numbers and does not qualify for team results, but Izzy Dupere ’24 and Lici Hoermann ’24 led the team. Emma Dupere ’26 had some challenges on the first run and then pulled it together and had a great second run. These girls work hard each day with their positive attitude and team spirit.
Will Gaulin ’26 and Mauricio Lopez-Adazabal ’24 were our top JV skiers, finishing with an outstanding 1st and 3rd respectively.
Next Wednesday [1/25] our varsity and JV teams return to Ski Sundown for slalom.
Joe Muslu ’23 and Elizabeth Cerrato ’25 were sidelined by injury and illness and we look forward to having them back on the mountain for our next race.
Feel free to do a snow dance!
On February 1 the alpine ski team traveled to Hillsdale, New York to compete in a giant slalom race at Catamount Mountain. Finishing the regular season with 9-0 record, the boys’ alpine team topped the field and defeated Berkshire, Salisbury and Frederick Gunn.
Varsity racers Robby Kurzer ’24, Max Sena-Goldschmidt ’24, and Max Massoni ’24 led the Tigers by placing second, third, and fourth overall [out of a field of 60 racers]. Henry Harding ’24 and Brandon Park ’25 also scored for the team and placed in the top ten. Jake Brook ’25, Andrew Pollini ’26, and Jack Clancy ’25 skied two consistent runs.
Izzy Dupere ’24 continued her streak as our top girl finisher. Emma Dupere ’26 and Lici Hoermann ’24 also had a great race. Elizabeth Cerrato ’25 had some trouble navigating the bottom part of the course on her first run but had an excellent second run. It has been wonderful to see these girls improve, support their teammates, and have a positive attitude all season.
Will Gaulin ’26 and Mauricio Lopez-Adazabal ’24 were our top JV skiers, finishing 1st and 5th respectively. These athletes have worked hard to become faster racers.
The alpine skiers now enter 3 weeks of Championship races:
- Wednesday [2/8] Suffield will host the Brigham Ski League giant slalom championship at Ski Sundown
- Wednesday [2/15] Suffield will compete in the Class A NEPSAC Championship at Berkshire East in Charlemont, MA
- Wednesday [2/22] Suffield will host the Brigham Ski League slalom championship at Ski Sundown.

Frederick Gunn Girls 313The Alpine Tigers competed in the first half of the Brigham Ski League Championship at Ski Sundown on February 8. There are fourteen teams in the league. This was a giant slalom race with a field of 108 skiers.
The boys’ team displayed consistent, strong skiing and notched another win. Five of Suffield’s eight boys’ varsity racers placed in the top ten. Robby Kurzer ’24 clinched the overall giant slalom title by skiing the fastest combined time on the hill. Max Sena-Goldschmidt ’24 also earned a place on the podium [3rd], followed closely by Max Massoni ’24 [4th], Henry Harding ’24 [7th], and Brandon Park ’25 [9th]. Jake Brook ’25, Andrew Pollini ’26 and Jack Clancy ’25 skied 2 swift runs. Having five finishers in the top 10 is an impressive, rare accomplishment.
The girls were led by Emma Dupere ’26, Lici Hoermann ’24, and Elizabeth Cerrato ’25. Izzy Dupere ’24 tipped-in and was unable to complete her first run, but she approached the second run with focus and consistency and was our top female finisher. Unfortunately, our girls team does not have a full team and were penalized for not having enough racers but were still able to edge out Ethel Walker and Frederick Gunn.
The second half of the BSL Championship [slalom event] will take place on February 22.
Next week [February 15] the Tigers will travel to Berkshire East to compete in the Class A NEPSAC championships. This is an all-day event hosting the best independent school racers from New England. Teams field five racers, and they compete in two runs of slalom and two runs of giant slalom. Go Tigers!

Team Overview
Suffield Academy has one of the top alpine ski teams in southern New England. The team has successfully worked with experienced and new racers. The team trains daily at Ski Sundown in New Hartford, Connecticut combining slalom and giant slalom training with on-campus strength and conditioning workouts. Video analysis of our own racers is also a regular component of our training program.
Suffield’s daily schedule permits the alpine ski team to maximize their on-snow training and racing time, without making any sacrifices to the demanding academic standards of the school. Students leave campus shortly after lunch and return before dinner. In addition to interscholastic racing, Suffield offers its athletes the opportunity to compete independently in races sanctioned by the Eastern Division of the United States Ski Association (USSA).
History
Both the boys’ and girls’ teams compete in the Brigham Ski League (BSL) and the Class A New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC), against opponents that include Berkshire, Loomis Chaffee, Salisbury, and Taft. We race on Wednesdays at mountains including Ski Sundown, Butternut Basin, Mohawk, and Catamount. Both girls’ and boys’ teams represent Suffield at the New England Championships. Suffield racers have won or finished in the Top 10 in several of these championships during the past few years.
