Suffield boy’s tennis is off to an excellent 2-1 start to the year with back to back wins against Berkshire 4/12 and away at Cheshire 4/7. Captain Hayden Rowley (Jr.) leads a new-look Suffield that replaces 6 seniors from its 2022 New England tournament team.
On a beautiful yet windy day, Suffield managed to come from behind and defeat Berkshire in a close 4-3 match. The contest began with Suffield against the ropes vs Berkshire’s strong doubles teams. Berkshire won the double’s point by sweeping teams #1, #2 and #3, while Suffield had more success with its #4 and #5 exhibition teams. Charlie Riegel stood out in the doubles for his excellent play at net, instinctively putting away any ball that came to him.Following the doubles, Suffield was able to find its groove during the singles matches. Dan Zola was ruthless in his 6-0 6-0 victory at the #2 position, giving up almost zero unforced errors and consistently pressuring his opponent. Joseph Jung was next to finish, continuing his excellent recent form. Joe’s much improved big first serve helped him comfortably win most of his service games. #4 George Voronkov and #1 Hayden Rowley both played well, but were defeated by excellent opponents. At #5, Sam Longley was able to use his excellent volleying and consistent baseline game to hold off a tough late challenge from his opponent to even the overall team score to 3-3. Like many matches last year, today’s match came down to clutch play from Chetan Jolly at the #3 position. Chetan sealed the deal for Suffield through his agility–retrieving everything his opponent threw at him, and counterattacking with his own heavy topspin forehand. In Exhibition singles, both Jay Ryu and Aiden Longley won tough matches. Jay’s backhand was dominant in his match, while Aiden was a wall that his opponent could not break down.

The Suffield Varsity Tennis team has historically trained with top-ranked USTA players, international standouts, and recreational players who have had some formal coaching. Our demanding schedule regularly matches us up against some of the strongest teams in the WNEPSA. We have made it to the New England tournament twice in the last ten years. Coach Yuan ’05 was a four-year member of the Suffield Academy Boys’ Varsity Tennis team and went on to play D3 at Grinnell College in Iowa. Over the last few years, the Suffield squad has worked with students who have gone on to be major contributors to Division I, and strong Division II and III programs including Loyola Maryland, Williams, Union, Franklin and Marshall, and Bentley.
