The Tigers opened their season Wednesday afternoon, welcoming a talented Class A Worcester Academy squad to Holmes Field. The first 15 minutes of play were evenly contested, with both teams battling hard in midfield. However, as the game progressed, Worcester began to capitalize on key opportunities, taking advantage of several costly Tiger errors in both halves of play.
The Tigers look to bounce back and sharpen their play next Wednesday against Class A Taft.
The Suffield Academy Tigers faced off against Ethel Walker on home ground at Shay Turf in a thrilling contest.
Ethel Walker capitalized on a defensive error in the 28th minute, when Suffield gave the ball away while playing out from the back, leading to an early 0-1 deficit. Just seven minutes later, Ethel Walker doubled their lead from a corner kick. An in-swinging delivery slipped through the hands of the Suffield goalkeeper and found the back of the net, putting the Tigers down 0-2 heading into halftime.
Suffield came out of the break with renewed energy and purpose. In the 47th minute, the Tigers clawed their way back into the match. Kayla Barthel ’25 won a ball deep in Suffield’s defensive third and connected with Charlotte Theriault ’27, who initiated a quick combination play. Theriault found Diana Baffor ’25, who played a perfectly weighted through ball to Jocyline Koffi ’26. Koffi showed her composure, beating the Ethel Walker goalkeeper to cut the deficit to 1-2.
Momentum continued to build for Suffield. In the 64th minute, the Tigers were awarded a free kick from 40 yards out. Barthel delivered a lofted ball into the box, where Baffor timed her run perfectly, racing past the defenders and getting a touch on the ball just before the goalkeeper could react. Her effort tied the game at 2-2.
With time winding down, Suffield player Ali Slade '25 won possession at midfield, and played the ball to Alina Zajac ’27. Zajac dribbled down the right side, playing a well-placed pass into a streaking Baffor. Baffor drew a defender before sliding the ball to a wide open Koffi at the penalty mark, who slotted home the game winning goal.
