Suffield acknowledged nominees and recipients of “Athlete of the Week” at lunch on February 25. The award recognizes outstanding achievements by male and female students whose contributions embody the spirit of Suffield athletics and citizenship. Recipients of the award display sportsmanship and character in honoring what it means to be a Suffield Tiger.
The female athlete of the week was Emma Krasemann ’21 from swimming and diving. Emma bested her school record and established herself as a top three diver in Division I New England with a fine performance at the Williston Invitational on February 22. Beating her record by almost 20 points in the 11-dive competition, Emma raised the bar from 442 to 460 points to defeat all her competitors and secure Suffield the win.
The male athletes of the week were Judge Burke ’20 and Elm Piyasombatkul ’21 from boys’ varsity squash and Jake DeSabato ’21 from boys’ junior varsity basketball. Judge and Elm each secured a key individual match victory to help the Tigers defeat Westminster 5-2 for 3rd place in the High School National Team Tournament on February 23. The win avenged an earlier 3-4 loss to Westminster and marked just the second time the boys’ team has defeated Westminster in 20 seasons.
Jake averaged double-digit scoring while spear-heading the Tigers’ defensive efforts on a recent six-day, four-game road trip that saw Suffield take three out of the four games. One of the strongest junior varsity teams in recent history, the Tigers maintain a season record 11-4 with two games left to play. Jake has played an integral part of the group, particularly in the team’s press and press break. He has used his lightning-quick speed and hard work to generate numerous steals and fast-break points for the Tigers.
