As the grandchild of immigrants, Neeva Patel ’26 has always been passionate about the experiences, challenges, and triumphs of immigrants starting anew in a foreign land. It wasn’t until her grandfather passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic that she realized the stories she grew up listening to wouldn’t last forever unless someone preserved and shared them. “I regret not asking my grandfather questions about his life. His passing left me with faded memories and a deep sense of loss. It made me realize the importance of preserving our family history and the stories of those who came before us.” This realization inspired Neeva to interview immigrants, build a website, and share their incredible stories.
“Our Motel Stories” explores the journeys of Indian immigrants particularly in Gujarati communities in America. Neeva shared “This is a tribute to my grandparents and an effort to preserve and share the untold stories of resilience and perseverance that have contributed to America’s history and success.” Neeva’s mission is to create a digital archive that captures the life stories of Gujarati immigrants in the hospitality industry–ensuring their stories are not lost with time. “I want to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions and to show the world the resilience and determination of the Gujarati community.” Neeva has written stories and interviewed many immigrants on her website, which she hopes to grow. “I want to expand my website beyond immigrants just in the Northeast to the rest of the country. It is my belief that history matters and that where we come from shape who we are and where we are going.” By sharing these stories Neeva hopes to inspire others to share their heritage, pursue their dreams despite obstacles, and ask questions that will open doors to a lifetime of wisdom that is waiting to be heard.
