Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year

The Suffield Academy community celebrated Lunar New Year 2023 on January 20 and 22. Lunar New Year is celebrated in many different Asian countries with some differing traditions and names for the day. On January 20 there was a crafts event where students made origami bunnies (2023 is the year of the rabbit), fans, T-shirts, and paper dragons. On January 22 there was a dinner for the AAPI members of the Suffield community on the 4th floor of Memorial. Luna Kwon ’23 was one of the main student organizers of the weekend’s events and she said, “I can proudly say that both events were a big success. We had Chinese snacks and desserts brought directly from China, and we got Korean food, including the dumpling rice cake soup, which is customarily eaten on New Year’s Day. The Lunar New Year dinner was able to happen thanks to the collaboration of so many people including Mrs. Lopez, Mr. Yuan, Ms. Sawada, the AAPI Affinity group leaders, and of course the International Student Leaders and Mrs. Nahmens. The whole process—planning, ordering food, decorating—was not the easiest, but seeing the community convene to celebrate a vital part of our culture made the effort so worth it.”
