Spring Sports Recap

The Suffield Tigers continued their spring seasons with interscholastic play on April 17. Here are some highlights from the weekend’s competitions.

The golf team hosted Canterbury and registered their second victory of the season. Senior Alex Withers Clarke led the field posting a solid 42. Eric Winikur ’22, Frank Roberts ’22, and Robby Kurzer ’24 each carded a 44. The final team totals were Suffield 219 against Canterbury’s 236. The Tigers will tee it up to meet Salisbury on April 23.

Boys’ lacrosse visited Rye Country Day and returned home to Bell Hill with an 11-6 win. The Tigers pounced to an early 6-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Luke Violich-Czinczoll ’22 tallied four goals and two assists on the day. Jake DeSabato ’21 added another three. Jack Lynam followed with two goals. David Towers ’21 and Austin Moore ’23 each added a goal to the final score with Towers also finishing with an assist. Strong defensive support was provided by Henry Shiftan ’22, Ben Warner ’22, and Cole Higgins ’23 in addition to Connor Smith’s ’22 consistent face-off wins.

The baseball team returned home with a win and a loss after their doubleheader at Canterbury School. The Tigers were led by Chris Moore ’21 in the first game with three hits, two runs, two stolen bases, and an RBI. Starting pitcher Anthony Izzo '21 earned the 7-3 win with five strong innings allowing three hits, one earned run, and eight strikeouts. Bennet Simpson '22 and Moore threw well out of the bullpen to close the game. Canterbury won the second game of the doubleheader taking advantage of eleven walks by four Suffield pitchers to earn the 17-5 win in a game shortened to five innings. Moore batted a solo home run in the first inning and Noel Batista '22 and Rene Nunez '21 each earned two hits for Suffield.

Boys’ and girls’ track & field welcomed Canterbury to their first meet of the season with the boys winning 49-19 and the girls 49-4. Senior captain Jenna Daly won the 1500m and 800m while fellow senior captain Rose Caso took the 400m. Freshman Keyvanna Bennett threw for 36' 7" in the shot put and placed 1st in the 100m and 200m. Senior captains Will Schmitz and Joe Rusnock had a great running day for the boys, with Schmitz taking 1st in the 200m and 2nd in the 400m and Rusnock placing 1st in the 400m and 3rd in the 200m. Schmitz and Rusnock were also a part of the winning 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams. Senior captain Garrett Mastella joined the winning 4x400m relay team and placed 1st in the 1500m, while fellow senior Zach Feller won the 100m, placed 2nd in the 200m, and also won both the long jump and triple jump. The Tigers will host Pomfret on May 1.

Girls’ junior varsity tennis continued their winning ways with a narrow 4-3 victory over Canterbury School. The contest was decided by strong play in the #1 and #2 singles matches by junior co-captain Sophia Molander who defeated her opponent 8-5 and freshman Norah Wright who bested her opponent by the same score 8-5. Natalie Datz ’23 also earned a single’s win in the #4 spot by a score of 6-3. In doubles, Hannah Cote ’22 and Kelsie Nemeth ’22 teamed up to better their opponents 8-3. The Tigers will host Millbrook next.
