The Suffield community celebrated Lunar New Year with several festive events on campus. The Year of the Dragon celebration began with a craft night hosted by the AAPI (Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders) affinity group. Students made origami dragon faces, light up cards, and designed Lunar New Year t-shirts.
The next evening students came together for a Lunar New Year dinner celebration. Surrounded by beautiful decorations and delicious Chinese and Korean food, students exchanged well wishes for the coming year. Leaders of AAPI Sam Longley ’24 and Joseph Jung ’24 commented “This is our home away from home and it was so special to gather with friends, eat traditional food, and celebrate together.”
International Student Coordinator Gis-Xi Nahmens shared “Lunar New Year is the most important celebration for many of our Asian students and it was a special evening for them to come together to celebrate, share food, and spend time together. Many faculty members including Mr. and Mrs. Cahn, Ms. Chan, Mr. Yuan, Mrs. Killam, and Ms. Pouy helped make several celebrations happen throughout the week.”
Meiyi Chen ’24 added “The Lunar New Year dinner was fun and enjoyable. We were able to eat delicious dumplings and fish cooked by faculty members and enjoyed a good time watching the New Year’s gala together.”
This weekend students have the opportunity to continue the festivities and attend the Lunar New Year parade in the Chinatown neighborhood of Boston.
