Suffield Academy’s boarding students participated in a campus-wide Electro-Contest from February 21 to 28. This was the second weeklong contest in the current academic year. The contests are aimed at highlighting and reducing the community’s energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Stacy Yurkovskaya ’23 recorded initial baseline weekly energy use by dorm and then re-recorded it after the contest.
The top three finishers will receive prizes ranging from a night in the Union during study hall to a day out of dress code or a food party. Brodie Hall earned first place, saving 24% of their initial weekly electricity usage, Barnes House was second with a 22% reduction, and Kotchen Dorm was third at 20%. A special prize will be awarded to residents of Samii Dormitory for saving 16% of their initial weekly usage and also reducing energy significantly in the first contest this fall.
Stacy said, “I want to congratulate everybody, as this week together we saved 2210 kilowatt hours—a 15% overall reduction! We have achieved the overall goal which means we will get an ice cream truck after break!”
