Winter Sports Highlights

As the Tigers now turn to the spring athletics season, we reflect on season highlights of a memorable winter. These included a ski team league championship, New England swimming records, a boys’ squash New England championship performance, and a girls’ basketball run to the New England tournament semis.

The 2024 boys’ alpine ski team won the Brigham Ski League title, finishing first in both the slalom and giant slalom championships. Robby Kurzer ’24 was Suffield’s top finisher [first in the giant slalom and second in the slalom] and All-New England status. The boys had an undefeated league record against Berkshire, Taft, Salisbury, Loomis, Frederick Gunn, Hotchkiss, and Forman. Henry Harding ’24, Max Massoni ’24, Max Sena-Goldschmidt ’24, Patrick Bosma ’27, Brandon Park ’25, and Jake Brook ’25 also scored valuable points for the team. 

At the 2024 NEPSSA Championship, John Rusnock ’25 proved his excellence as a Suffield swimmer. He was New England Champion in the 100 Fly and 200 IM and broke New England records in both events. John was also presented the Babcock Award, which recognizes skill and dedication, and great leadership and character. Mackenzie Headley ’24 led the girls’ team, placing 1st in 100 Breaststroke and 2nd in 200 IM. The girls’ 200 Free Relay team placed 2nd [Amelia Curtin ’26, Iza Zajac ’25, Sydney Amerson ’25, Mackenzie Headley ’24] and 200 Medley Relay team placed 3rd [Logan Hoang ’27, Nora Boino ’24, Mackenzie Headley ’24, Iza Zajac ’25]. In the highly competitive A division championship Suffield’s girls’ team finished 5th and the boys were 6th.

Boys' Squash won the NEPSAC Class E Championship and finished 6th at US Nationals. The team beat Berkshire and Williston on the way to the NEPSAC title. They finished 25th in New England, up from 32nd last season. Suffield has had teams finish with higher end of season New England rankings, but this is the highest divisional championship the program has won. Eli Carpol ‘26 earned Honorable mention All NEPSAC, Aidan Ryder ’26 is 6-0 in New England Tournament play over two seasons. Co-captain Brady Holmes ’24 was undefeated at the New England D tournament this year.

Girls’ basketball had an outstanding season. They were the top team in Western New England and made the NEPSAC semifinals. Ania McMichael ’24 and KeyVanna Bennett ’24 were selected NEPSAC All Stars and KeyVanna Bennett ’24 hit the 1,000-point milestone as she finished her Suffield basketball career.

Riflery had another successful season. In the 3 position NRA sectional, Suffield’s top four scored fourth as a team and James Li ’26 scored 10th in Connecticut. In the 4-position conventional NRA sectional, the top four scored fourth as a team. James Li scored 6th in the state, and Robin Su ’24 scored 9th. James Li, Robin Su, and Jerry Chen ’24 are in contention for all-state recognition. James Li was 15th. 

Kayden Bennett ’26 won the Western New England wrestling championship, placed second in the NEPSWA Championship, and participated in the National Prep Championship at Lehigh.
