Convocation

Suffield emphasizes kindness, respect, leadership, and effort. As we start, please know these are non-negotiable; they are fundamental parts of the Suffield experience—shared values that should permeate our community. These traits embody what Suffield is all about.Head of School Charlie Cahn

Suffield Academy’s 2025-2026 academic year officially began with Convocation on September 8 in Tisch Field House. Head of School Charlie Cahn opened the program by noting that the orientation week reflected the spirit and cohesion of the Suffield Academy community. Mr. Cahn welcomed Suffield’s 150 new students and seven new faculty members before recognizing Suffield’s most senior faculty and staff members who have been a part of the community for more than thirty years—Mrs. Vianney, Mr. and Mrs. Goodwin, Mrs. Cahn ’88, Mr. Hennessey, Mr. Moore, Mr. Kasanowski, Ms. Mish, and Ms. Rusczyk. He said, “These people help carry forward the values and traditions of our school.”

Student Council President Quinn Kiernan ’26 expressed optimism for the year ahead and reassured new students about the warmth and friendliness of the Suffield community. He offered thoughtful advice to each class and inspired all to embrace the opportunities this new academic year will bring.

Dean of Academics and Faculty Sara Yeager welcomed the new year with a message inspired by the recent blockbuster hit Wicked. She began her talk by donning a long blonde wig to channel Glinda—the popular and confident personality in the story. Ms. Yeager reflected on the misunderstood character of Elphaba and challenged the community to reconsider how we label others—and ourselves. She emphasized the importance of kindness, empathy, and recognized that everyone carries their own story, hopes, and dreams. She urged students to be true to themselves and treat others with compassion. She concluded with a powerful reminder: “Most times, being kind matters more than being right.”

The Convocation ceremony was a spirited and inspiring morning before students attended their first academic class. Underclass Prize Day will take place as the chapel program on Monday, September 15.
