King James

King James

Students in the senior seminar course Dramatic Literature recently attended the hit production of King James at Hartford TheaterWorks. The show explores themes of friendship, ambition, and identity and aligns with the class's focus on contemporary dramas. While it centers around LeBron James’ career, the play serves as a backdrop for deeper discussions about loyalty, change, and personal growth.

Faculty member Tom Dugan shared “Our student-athletes in the course particularly enjoyed the play because it blended sports and theater in a way that felt authentic. The play captures the emotional highs and lows of being a sports fan while also showcasing the dedication and passion that athletes bring to their craft. This fusion of art and athletics made it engaging for students who might not typically connect with theater.”

Suffield alum Gavin Mastella ’19, who serves as the Deck Chief at Hartford TheaterWorks, played a pivotal role in the production's staging. The play's portrayal of sports culture sparked a spirited debate among the students of who truly deserves the title of “greatest of all time” in basketball—LeBron James or Michael Jordan? This unresolved argument remains a lively topic of conversation as the class transitions to their next topic.
