Scorched Stories

At Suffield Academy, we celebrate students who use their voices to make an impact. For Sophie Kaplan ’26, the devastating impact of wildfires became personal when her grandparents were displaced from their home in the Pacific Palisades. Seeing their confusion, loss, and struggle to rebuild opened her eyes to the lasting effects of natural disasters—beyond just the immediate devastation. “I thought about all the memories I made in their home. I felt their discomfort aching in their skin. I cried over the state of the city I once called home,” she shared. This experience led Sophie to a realization: stories of loss, resilience, and recovery need to be told.

Determined to create a platform where these voices could be heard, Sophie launched Scorched Stories, a blog dedicated to sharing the personal and emotional side of natural disasters. Through powerful storytelling, she highlights the experiences of those who have faced unimaginable loss—giving them a space to reflect, process, and be understood.

A recent post, “The Slow Burn of Loss,” tells the story of Juliet Sidoti, a teenager whose home was destroyed in a wildfire. Sophie’s writing captures the disorientation and grief that come with such sudden loss. “Juliet lost her stability, routine, and identity with her home. And that kind of loss takes time to heal,” Sophie writes. Scorched Stories aims to show that grief doesn’t follow a timeline—and that it’s okay to mourn not just what was lost, but the life that once was.

Sophie hopes to continue expanding Scorched Stories, providing a platform for more voices and bringing awareness to the long-term emotional toll of natural disasters. “This is more than just a blog—it’s a way to offer comfort, security, and understanding to those who have been through similar experiences.”

If you or a loved one has a story to share, please reach out to Sophie at scorchedstories@gmail.com—she hopes to continue amplifying voices and raising awareness through her platform.
