Sharing the Field of Forensics

On Friday, November 15, Suffield Academy's Forensic Science class, led by science teacher Ramona Fontaine, had the unique opportunity to hear from Sarah Boguszewski, a seasoned Medical Examiner’s Assistant who will soon begin her new role as a Forensic Analyst for the State of Connecticut.

Sarah shared her fascinating journey into the field of forensic science, captivating the class with insights into her career. Her talk offered a rare glimpse into the responsibilities of a Medical Examiner’s Assistant and explored a wide array of forensic topics, including CSI procedures, Medicolegal Death Investigation, Forensic Anthropology, and Forensic Entomology.

Students were particularly engaged as Sarah walked them through the detailed steps of an autopsy, complete with graphic images that highlighted the technical and investigative aspects of her work. She explained the differences between Forensic Pathology and Forensic Anthropology, shedding light on how specialists in these fields collaborate to uncover critical information in death investigations.

Additionally, Sarah introduced the students to Forensic Entomology—the study of insects as it relates to criminal investigations—and discussed how this specialized knowledge can provide crucial insights into the time and circumstances of a person’s death.

This interactive session not only expanded the students’ understanding of forensic science but also sparked curiosity and admiration for the work that goes into solving mysteries and delivering justice. The class left with a deeper appreciation for the complexities of forensic investigations and the diverse expertise required to support them.
