The Art and Science of Glaze Calculation

The Art and Science of Glaze Calculation

At Suffield Academy the art of ceramics goes beyond shaping clay—it’s about mastering the perfect finish. A unique highlight of the program is the inclusion of Glaze Calculation, a subject typically reserved for college-level courses. This distinctive offering allows students to dive into the chemistry behind glazes and create their own custom finishes.

In this component of the ceramics curriculum students learn the fundamentals of glaze composition, understanding the balance between various oxides, fluxes, and silica that contribute to the glaze's texture, color, and finish. Under the guidance of instructor Mrs. Caginalp, they explore how different ingredients and firing temperatures can dramatically alter the final outcome of their ceramic pieces.

The class offers a unique blend of scientific exploration and artistic expression. Students experiment with formulas, adjust ratios, and test their creations, all while learning to troubleshoot and refine their glazes to achieve the desired effect. The result is a personal collection of glazes that reflect each student's creativity and technical skill.

Through this hands-on experience, Suffield students gain a deeper appreciation for the complexities of ceramics, building a strong foundation for future artistic endeavors. The inclusion of Glaze Calculation in the curriculum not only enhances their understanding of the medium but also encourages innovation and individual expression.
