WALKS Constitutional Essay Contest

WALKS Constitutional Essay Contest

This year marked the 64th anniversary of the WALKS Foundation’s Constitutional Essay Contest, hosted at Kingswood-Oxford. Founded in 1962 by two Hartford attorneys, the contest challenges students to explore the origins, principles, and modern-day relevance of the U.S. Constitution.

Open to history students from the five WALKS schools—Westminster, Avon Old Farms, Loomis Chaffee, Kingswood-Oxford, and Suffield Academy—the competition begins with each school’s History Department Chair selecting two standout research papers, whose authors advance as finalists.

Representing Suffield this year were Maxwell Huang ’28 and Jessica Wang ’28. Their anonymized essays were evaluated by the Honorable Nuala E. Droney, Administrative Judge for the Hartford Judicial District. Maxwell earned third place overall—an impressive achievement in a highly competitive field.
