Anu Rawlings

Born in Maui, Hawaii but raised in Kennebunk, Maine, Anu double majored in English and Secondary Education at Roger Williams University. While there, Anu discovered a passion for learning through travel and studied abroad during her sophomore, junior, and senior years in Italy, England, and Germany. She spends her summers in Maine where she has taught swimming lessons at a camp in Kennebunk for over 10 years.

At Suffield, Anu is a member of the English department and assists with the swimming and diving program and girls’ varsity water polo. She lives on campus as a dorm parent.

Where were you born?
Maui, Hawaii

What do you love about where you are from?
I grew up in Kennebunk, Maine and the thing I love most is the ocean. 

What is the first thing you do every morning when you get to work?
Write the daily journal question on the board while I drink my coffee. 

Who is your favorite artist?
There are a lot. Lorde, Frank Ocean, The Bleachers, Maggie Rogers, Mac Miller. It was a big Taylor Swift year for me too.

What is your favorite book?
Too many to name! But my favorite of the last year is The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. It’s a really beautifully written adaptation of an ancient text. I also loved The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. 

Which of your roles at Suffield Academy do you relish the most?
I really do enjoy it all! The best part of our job is getting to know our students in the classroom, the dorm, at sports, and in clubs. I also have an amazing group of advisees I love working with. 

What is something you believe one can never over-invest in?
The people you love. 

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
Alaska so I can see some Orcas.
