Sean Atkins

Sean joined the admissions office at Suffield Academy in 2010. He was appointed Senior Associate Director of Admissions in 2013, Director of Admissions in 2016, and Director of Admissions & Financial Aid in 2017. Prior to arriving at Suffield, Sean spent seven years at The Boys’ Club of New York [BCNY] as Associate Director of Educational Advancement.

During his time at BCNY, Sean helped place over 300 young men in various independent schools. He also served as Head of School for BCNY’s Gardiner School summer program. He is a graduate of Darlington School and Bates College. Sean lives on campus with his wife Yasmin, sons Sean Jr. and Gavin, and daughter Juliet. He also assists the boys’ varsity basketball team.


Where were you born?
Lower East Side of Manhattan.

What do you love about where you are from?
I met my wife there.

If someone was traveling to where you are from for 24 hours, what would you recommend? What would you tell them to do/where would you tell them to go?
Grab a bacon, egg, and cheese with a cup of coffee from a bodega; take in some shopping in SoHo; get a pastrami sandwich from Katz’s Delicatessen; take a stroll through the neighborhood, and enjoy the unique vibe and energy; and lastly, visit my favorite restaurant II Posto Accanto.

What do you love about where you live now?
I love that I am able live where I work.

What is your favorite thing about day-to-day life at Suffield Academy?
The smiling faces on campus.

What is the first thing you do every morning when you get to work?
Drink coffee.

Who is your favorite artist?
Jay-Z.

Who do you live on campus with?
My wife Yasmin and three awesome children, Sean Jr., Gavin, and Juliet.

How do you think your dog would describe you?
Strict...because I don’t let her sleep on the bed.

Which of your roles at Suffield Academy do you relish the most?
My role as Director of Admissions—I am extremely fortunate to be in this position.

What is the favorite thing in your closet?
My shoes [sneakers].

What is something you believe one can never over-invest in?
Yourself...self-care is very important.

What is/are your prized possession(s)?
My family.

What is your favorite song of all time?
“Encore” by Jay-Z.

If you could have dinner with one person, alive or dead, who would you dine with?
My mother—she passed away when I was 16.

Who is your role model/inspiration?
My grandmother.

Dean Smith.

What is your favorite movie?
The Great Outdoors.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go, and why?
Maldives... it has been a life-long dream. The beauty and culture look unbelievable. 

What is your favorite food?
Bacon
