The boys’ varsity squash team traveled to Loomis for their preseason playday. Each member of the Tiger team (#1 – 8) played 2 games against his corresponding number opponents from Westminster, Avon Old Farms, Loomis, and Kingswood Oxford. Thus, each team member played 8 games total.
Last season’s team managed just a single game win in this event. This year’s squad faired much better. The team won 22 games overall. They went 4-12 vs Loomis and KO, 2-14 vs Westy, and 12-4 vs Avon.
Every member of the team, save one, won a game. #3 Eli Carpol ’26 posted the best record of the day at 6-2, while #8 Alex Suarez-Vargas ’26 also earned a winning record at 5-3.
Overall, it was a competitive and fun break to the typical practice. The team now has a week to prepare to host Trinity Pawling next Wednesday.
#6 Aidan Ryder ’26 and #7 Alex Suarez ’26 earned straight game victories for the home side, but these were the only two matches the team could secure. Numbers 2 – 5 each fell 0-3 despite losing several close 2 or 3 point games.
#1 Eli Carpol ’26, pushed his talented adversary to five games before falling 9-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-5, 11-9.
The team opens its road season on Saturday as they travel to Pomfret seeking revenge for last year’s narrow 3-4 defeat. Hopefully the squad can earn its first victory of the season and return home 1 and 1.The tigers were not quite deep enough to fend off the griffins today in NE CT. Suffield staked claim to the top the ladder with #1 Eli Carpol ' 26 and # 2 co-captain Austin Rappaport ' 25 each winning decisively 3-0. #3 co-captain Charlie Riegel played the match of the day and defeated his skilled opponent 3-1 by challenging his fitness and running him for four hard games. Charlie took coaching well and did a great job executing a game plan. Unfortunately, the tables turned on the bottom half of the ladder as Pomfret's depth proved too much for Suffield to overcome. Suffield could not extract a single game from the griffins' grip between #4 and # 8. The team has trained well and improved a lot in this early season but was not able to demonstrate their progress on this day. They stand at 0-2 after two close defeats wondering what might have been and now prepare to host Williston Northampton School and a strong Salisbury School team in a tri-match next Wednesday before winter break. Hopefully, they shake off the nerves, play to their ability, and earn their first match victory before vacation.

Team Overview
The goal of the program is to be as competitive as possible while supporting anyone who wants to play across all ability levels. Students who play varsity upon entering Suffield usually have prior squash experience, though talented tennis players have been able to successfully transition to the game at the varsity level.
The team strives for the best record against the best competition while upholding the highest standards of sportsmanship and respectful competition. The JV team stresses the fundamental skills of the game as well as the lifelong nature and lessons of the sport such as sportsmanship, fitness, and competitive camaraderie. The most experienced and seasoned JV players often make the jump to the varsity squad after a few seasons of training.
The Suffield boys’ squash program has built a strong tradition over the last quarter century. During this brief history, the team has qualified for the “A” tournament twice [2006 & 2015-16], finished second in the “B” tournament three times [2007, 2008, & 2019], and won the “C” tournament [2012] and the "E" tournament [2023]. The Suffield boys’ varsity squash team competes against many of the strongest programs in western New England, including Loomis Chaffee, Berkshire, Avon Old Farms, and Salisbury. The Tigers are always looking for the most challenging opponents they can find. Though the Tigers are among the newer members of the New England Prep squash landscape, they have performed admirably since arriving and have notched team victories over perennial powers Deerfield, Loomis Chaffee, Hotchkiss, Avon, Salisbury, and Westminster among others, in their history. Some recent Suffield squash alumni have played competitively at the college level. Suffield players have competed for Cornell, Dartmouth, St. Lawrence, George Washington, Bates, Colby, and F&M, and are currently competing for Dickinson and the University of Rochester. A few alumni have even gone on to coach at the college and club levels after graduating from Suffield Academy.
The 2023-24 team looks to build on last year’s end of season success. They are no longer novice players merely learning the game for the first time. All eight players return from last year’s squad and, with new addition Eli Carpol ’26, this seasoned group hopes to make its mark in western New England squash.
