Lunar New Year Celebration
Suffield students and faculty gathered to recognize the Chinese New Year in Cone Lounge on February 5. While the event was largely organized by Asian students, all international and domestic members of the community were invited to join the festivities. “Several students purchased food at an Asian market in West Hartford over the long weekend and volunteered to be our cooks,” commented faculty member Gis-Xi Nahmens. Gis-Xi is chair of the languages department and the school’s international student coordinator. “The menu included boiled and steamed dumplings and custard and sesame filled buns,” she said. Kelly Lei ’20 was among the students who attended the event and commented, “The Lunar New Year is our biggest celebration in China and our favorite holiday. We had really fun night.”
According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2019 marks the year of the Pig. The Pig is the twelfth of all zodiac symbols and is believed to represent wealth and good fortune.
