Vol. XIII Issue XLIII

Dear Parents,

As I mentioned in a note to you earlier this week, our academic year is off to a strong start and our students are settled into the fast pace of life at Suffield. It has been nice seeing everyone welcome our 133 new students and watching the Class of 2017 help lead the community.

On October 3 we will begin a new program where seniors present at chapel. These talks and presentations will occur throughout the academic year, and hopefully prove to be formative experiences for our students that provide engaging chapel meetings. They will supplement traditional chapel programs throughout the year including guest speakers. All of the chapel events can be seen on the school's website (suffieldacademy.org/Chapel).

This week has included various events centered on community life. Along these lines, today we have a student meeting where we will review expectations of personal conduct and some important topics including technology use and personal boundaries. I have asked our school attorney (Jim Sconzo) to join me and Greg Lynch (Dean of Students) in highlighting how Suffield aims to support students and their growth, and how our expectations and policies support the school's mission.

You should have recently received information from us about the October 13-15 Parents' Weekend, which includes meetings with each of your child's classroom teachers and their faculty advisors. Parents of twelfth-grade students will meet with college counselors. We also welcome back many Suffield alums on that weekend for their reunion. Details can be seen on our website (suffieldacademy.org/parents) and we ask that you please RSVP to Kim Goodwin (kgoodwin@suffieldacademy.org) by October 6. Other upcoming events include the parent and alumni golf outing on October 7, Grandparents' Day on October 25, and the Admissions Open House on October 29.

We are working through various pieces related to upcoming campus construction including fundraising, design, and permitting. We are hoping to begin the expansion and renovation of Memorial Building when the academic year concludes in June 2017. Memorial is 162 years old and houses our English and languages departments, technology, marketing, academic support, and academic administration. As you can imagine, there are many logistics tied to this type of project including where these functions will move during construction. I will communicate more about this and other campus projects in the coming months.

In closing, I wanted to mention the exceptional work of our physical plant staff. Many parents have commented to me in the past few weeks that the campus is both striking and in beautiful shape. This is due in large measure to the investment and talent of these members of our community. We are very fortunate to have an exceptional faculty and staff, and they are at the heart of what makes Suffield special for our students.

We look forward to seeing everyone in a few weeks for our fall Parents' Weekend.

Sincerely,

Charlie Cahn
Headmaster
