The Class of 2017 Speaker Series – Words from our Seniors

Part 2: Senior Speakers
The senior speaker series continued on October 10 and featured eight members of the Class of 2017: Cameron Auchinachie, Eva Crouse, Luc Dutranoit, Ian Mactaggart, Jonah Perry, Poom Sriorathaikul, Alexis Corcoran, and Laura De Los Santos.
The series is a new addition to the chapel program where all seniors deliver a speech, presentation, or performance to the Suffield Academy community. Headmaster Charlie Cahn said he hopes the program will serve as a formative experience for the seniors, an opportunity to strengthen community, and a way to continue providing engaging chapel programming. These talks will be supplemented by traditional chapel events including the Community Text speaker (Mark Shriver this year), the Alumni Leadership Day program, the Student Council Elections, and the Kent-Davis Speaking Competition during Commencement week.
Leading off the afternoon, Cameron Auchinachie offered stories about snowshoeing, traveling, and swimming, encouraging his peers to try new things and create vast experiences during their time at Suffield. Eva Crouse talked about happiness and success and urged her classmates to be more than one dimensional. “Success is not determined by how many times you see your name on a record book,” she said. “It is defined by what you do to make yourself happy.” Luc Dutranoit spoke about Bermuda’s history and culture, showing a video about the island he calls home, and Ian Mactaggart shared information about charity work in Cambodia (Kulen Outreach) and prompted the community to lead a life of service. Jonah Perry mentioned the several strongest influences in his life and what they taught him. Concluding with a quotation from author and lecturer Dale Carnegie, Jonah stated, “It isn't what you have, or who you are, or where you are, or what you are doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about.” Poom Sriorathaikul discussed his own personal growth during his time at boarding school and the most significant things he learned from being a student in the United States. Alexis Corcoran spoke about her passion for field hockey and the challenges she overcame in becoming a goal tender. Finally, Laura De Los Santos explained how difficult she expected it to be to deliver a speech to the entire Suffield community and offered advice on how to manage it successfully.
The senior speaker series will resume on October 24.
