The Class of 2017 Speaker Series – Words from our Seniors
Suffield’s senior speaker series continued on December 12 and featured nine members of the Class of 2017: Jason Louro, Emma Paul, Leo Oh, Sara Pajouh, Yash Patel, Jerry Tang, Megan Varney, Riley Miles, and Casey Kaplan.
The series is a new addition to the chapel program where all seniors deliver a speech, presentation, or performance to the Suffield Academy community. Headmaster Charlie Cahn said he hopes the program will serve as a formative experience for the seniors, an opportunity to strengthen community, and a way to continue providing engaging chapel programming. These talks will be supplemented by traditional chapel events including the Community Text speaker (Mark Shriver this year), the Alumni Leadership Day program, the Student Council Elections, and the Kent-Davis Speaking Competition during Commencement week.
Jason Louro began by discussing the “emotional rollercoaster” of filmmaking and the process of creating a completed video. Emma Paul spoke about her hometown of Tolland, Massachusetts. With a population of only 485, she examined the difference between a small town and a really, really small town. Leo Oh contrasted what it is like to attend school in the United States versus the educational system in Korea. Revealing herself as a lifelong introvert, Sara Pajouh thanked her friends and Suffield for helping her grow and overcome social anxiety during her years here. Yash Patel presented his view on India’s greatest contributions to the world, while Jerry Tang discussed how his passions for swimming and crew influenced him greatly. “I learned to challenge myself to be better,” he asserted. “Whether you’re good at something or not so good, you should always look forward to the future.” Megan Varney talked about her experience working as a ride operator at an amusement park in her home state of Pennsylvania and shared some of her favorite and not so favorite things about parks. Performing her favorite song with Suffield’s 2015 cast of Spring Awakening, Riley Miles’ voice confirmed her love for musicals and theater. Finally, Casey Kaplan introduced her adoration for water skiing and presented videos of her most recent competitions.
