The Class of 2017 Speaker Series – Words from our Seniors
Suffield’s senior speaker series continued on April 10 and featured eight members of the Class of 2017: Hannah Durhager, Maggy Skaugen, Jonathan Lopez, Ben Marciano, Phakorn Chansrichawla, Sam Henderson, Isabella Pesaresi, and Andrew Robitaille.
The series is a new addition to the chapel program where all seniors deliver a speech, presentation, or performance to the Suffield Academy community. Headmaster Charlie Cahn said he hopes the program will serve as a formative experience for the seniors, an opportunity to strengthen community, and a way to continue providing engaging chapel programming. These talks will be supplemented by traditional chapel events including the Community Text speaker (Mark Shriver this year), the Alumni Leadership Day program, Student Council Elections, and the Kent-Davis Speaking Competition during Commencement week.
Finishing her second year at Suffield, Hannah Durhager spoke about her passion for yoga and meditation and shared a video centered on observing the beautiful sensations of reality. Maggy Skaugen talked about the impact acts of terrorism have had on her feelings of safety at her home in Norway and throughout the rest of the world. A proud Mexican-American and the first in his family to graduate high school and attend college, John Lopez discussed the advantages of hard work and opportunity. Ben Marciano shared a video to celebrate his love for skiing. Phakorn Chansrichawla examined the profound impact golf has had on his identity and growth. Having made the decision to give up a successful career in gymnastics to attend Suffield, Sam Henderson talked about his transformation as a diver and student athlete. Isabella Peraresi shared a video commemorating her childhood with her two brothers, while Andrew Robitaille spoke about overcoming obstacles, particularly his battle to complete a reverse flip for the school’s diving team.
The senior speaker series will resume on April 17.
