The Class of 2017 Speaker Series – Words from our Seniors

Suffield’s senior speaker series continued on April 17 and featured seven members of the Class of 2017: Sarah Alaimo, Cari Cyr, Maddie Kauffman, Jayda Reisman, Nora Chen, Nick Yan, and Jacob Michel.
The series is a new addition to the chapel program where all seniors deliver a speech, presentation, or performance to the Suffield Academy community. Headmaster Charlie Cahn said he hopes the program will serve as a formative experience for the seniors, an opportunity to strengthen community, and a way to continue providing engaging chapel programming. These talks will be supplemented by traditional chapel events including the Community Text speaker (Mark Shriver this year), the Alumni Leadership Day program, Student Council Elections, and the Kent-Davis Speaking Competition during Commencement week.
Sarah Alaimo began by humorously discussing the “14 signs you grew up as a Catholic school kid.” Cari Cyr followed by highlighting the common misconceptions people have of twins, the value of having a brother, and the many frustrating questions they often ask her. “Think twice before you ask twins questions,” she said, “and cherish every moment you have with your siblings.” After struggling to find her place as a child, Maddie Kauffman talked about discovering a home and great happiness at High Mountain Institute and later at Suffield. Jayda Reisman spoke about family, uncovering truths, and not allowing labels to influence judgement. Nora Chen noted important memories of her family and shared a slideshow featuring her artwork. Identifying his allergy to dust as the reason he studies abroad, Nick Yan talked about pollution in China and showed a short video highlighting the realities that poor air quality has had on his home city. Finally, Jacob Michel recognized the many positive events of 2016 that were seemingly overshadowed by negative and sad events.
The Class of 2017 senior speaker series will conclude on May 8.
