Tigers get a split in Water Polo...
Game One: Suffield v. Hotchkiss
Suffield started their season successfully with a balanced win over the Bearcats (Hotchkiss). The team sprinted to a 6-1 first quarter lead on the strength of some precision passing and well placed shots. The defense also held well against the hard working Lakeville opponents. Coach Ciecimirski substituted liberally to allow all the Tgermen some time to showcase their preseason efforts and skills. In Q2, Hotchkiss threatened more regularly, outscoring Suffield 3-2, resulting in a 8-4 halftime lead for the Orange.
In Q3, Suffield played a mixture of opportunistic and sloppy offense, resulting in both goals, but also, turnovers. Despite the errors made by the Tigers, they were able to build their lead to 13-6. Newcomers to the varsity, Jordan Slade, Westley Bartlett, Elias Smith, and Marco Secchiaroli each gained valuable experience in the contest, and proved that they had learned key aspects of the game to help them manage the challenge of league play at the varsity level. Q4 marked a closely fought period between the two squads.
Many fine plays were made by the starters and other varsity returnees: co-captains Cian Beaulieu and Max Miranda, Melvin Ku, Walter Kress, Sasha Derby, Max Bass, Oscar Ceria, Ryan Lunsford, Andrew Budge, and James Kagan. Netting goals for Suffield were Bass (4), Miranda (3), Beaulieu (2), Kress (2), Ku (2), Smith (1), and Secchiaroli (1).
Game Two: Suffield v. Exeter
In this game, Suffield never managed to adjust to Exeter's unrelenting defensive pressure. While the Tigers played fairly even with Exeter in the first quarter, down 0-2 at period end, the Orangemen struggled to stay close after that. Suffield's inexperience as an offensive unit showed, and they were overplayed in the field, owing to Exeter's better passing and field positioning. Both Tiger goals were netted by Junior Melvin Ku.
The only truly bright spot for Suffield in the outing was Sasha Derby's play in shallow end goal, as he recorded 9 saves in two quarters of play in front of the net.
