Tough going at Deerfield for the Tigers...
Water polo matches with Deerfield always bring forth impressive shows of energy, a spirit of competitiveness, and challenge. The Green Wave has long been noted for its fine aquatics programs, not least, their boys' varsity water polo team. In 2015 Suffield swept both contests with Deerfield, but last year, the schools split games, with DA taking the end of season contest. Games against common opponents in the young season suggested a close matchup was possible in the Deerfield-hosted contest.
The first quarter opened to Green fireworks, as the home team ran up a string of goals with no answer from the Tigers. The second quarter was more of the same, and Suffield found itself way behind, 2-10, at halftime. Deerfield's California duo, Andrew Penner and Henry Lowe, showcased a level of play at both ends that Suffield could not match, netting most of DA's goals for the first three quarters, and helped extend the home team's lead to 15-4. Liberal substitution by DA and a refocused Suffield effort in the final quarter helped mitigate the pain for the Tiger polomen, as Suffield found the back of the net seven times.
Orange goals were scored by Max Miranda (5), Walter Kress (2), Sasha Derby (2), Cian Beaulieu (1), and Melvin Ku (1). Goalie Jordan Slade recorded five saves and two assists.
Season record: 2-2
Next contest: Suffield at Loomis Chaffee (Windsor, CT), Friday, September 29, 4:30 pm
