Senior Speakers – January 8

The senior speaker series continued on January 8 and featured six members of the Class of 2018: Jackson Bischoping, Aidan Kennedy, Leon Schmidt, Zak Kidd, Joe Yunis, and Aidan Sagar.

The series launched last year as part of Suffield’s chapel program. All seniors deliver a speech, presentation, or performance to the community. Headmaster Charlie Cahn feels the program serves as a formative experience for the seniors and another opportunity to strengthen community. These talks are supplemented by traditional chapel events including the Alumni Leadership Day program, Student Council Elections, and Kent-Davis Speaking Competition during Commencement week.

From Austin, Texas, Jackson Bischoping spoke about the importance of mentors: “Mentors can help you in many ways and they can teach you many things and you never know what you’re going to learn from them. Listen to those who are older and wiser. Their advice may seem unsolicited at first, but you never know what is going to come of it.” Having had his best friend suffer from addiction and an eventual overdoes, Aidan Kennedy explained the value of friendship and the importance of support. “Never turn you back on people who need help,” he said. “Tell those who are important to you that you love them.” Following in his father’s footsteps, Leon Schmidt talked about his passion for flight and his desire to become a pilot. A four-year senior from East Hartland, Connecticut, Zak Kidd spoke about the challenge in responding to this college essay prompt: What matters? “Three months ago I couldn’t tell you what mattered,” he commented. “Today I can tell you with a single word: people.” Joe Yunis outlined his experience working as an intern in Suffield’s Department of Technology. “When everyone else was trying to get as far away from campus as possible last summer, I chose to find a job right here on campus,” he said with a smile. Aidan Sagar recited the poem “Forever” by Terri Nicole Tharrington and concluded, “We will always be Suffield students and the memories we have will stay with us forever.”

The senior speaker series will resume on January 22. You may view all chapel talks here.
