Athletes of the Week
Suffield acknowledged nominees and recipients of “Athlete of the Week” at lunch on January 16. The award recognizes outstanding achievements by male and female students whose contributions embody the spirit of Suffield athletics and citizenship.
The female athlete of the week was Sydney Winters ’18 from the varsity swim team. Sydney remains undefeated in all her races this season while competing against the finest swimmers from New England and New Jersey. She narrowly missed breaking pool records in the 100 fly, 200 IM, and 100 breaststroke in meets against Deerfield and Peddie and Andover. In the only serious challenge anticipated, Sydney defeated Deerfield’s defending New England butterfly champion with ease. Her powerful stroke led Suffield relays to convincing wins against the strong Andover and Peddie squads.
The male athlete of the week recognition was shared by Colt Jarvis ’20 and Max Miranda ’18. Colt led the Tiger A basketball team with 21 points in Suffield’s win against Williston and then scored 11 points including two clutch free throws with only 0.4 seconds left to defeat Deerfield by a final score 39-37. The Tigers remain undefeated with a 5-0 record. Max set pool records in meets against Deerfield and Peddie and Andover. He broke a 15-year-old record by almost two seconds in the 200 IM and lowered his own record from last year by another half second in the 200 free. His speed added to fast times in Tiger relays in both meets. Max continues to prove an invaluable member of the varsity swim team.
