The alpine ski team traveled to the Butternut Basin to compete in a slalom race against Salisbury, Gunnery, and Trinity-Pawling on January 24. In what proved to be a fast day for the Tigers, seven varsity skiers placed in the top 10. Ethan Ash '20 led the team this week with a 2nd-place finish. Nate Bonini '19 tied for 3rd and was only 0.4 seconds behind Ash. Conor Hawkins '20, Lexi Roberts '20, Jason Choi '19, Jack Cobb '20, and Sam Cuda '18 all scored well for the team. In the junior varsity race, Emma Phillips '19 posted the fastest combined time capturing the win. Sam Manning '20, Baxter Streeter '20, and Luke Bonini '21 finished 2nd, 3rd, and 4th respectively.
After a win over Avon Old Farms, the Tigers hosted the Wilbraham & Monson Academy Titans for a Saturday morning dual. With a wall to wall crowd, in every match and at most every weight, the Tigers dominated the Titans in a 54-24 victory. Michael Robidoux ’18 won 16-11 and Peter Thrall ’18 pinned his opponent in 70 seconds. Milo Marcus ’18 pinned his opponent in 40 seconds and Norman Cotteleer ’18 pinned his opponent 30 seconds into the second period. Suffield is now 11-2 and will head into the State Tournament led by undefeated Michael Robidoux.
Boys’ Varsity Squash
The boys’ varsity squash team improved to 4-5 with a convincing 9-0 win over the Canterbury Saints. The Tigers dropped just two games over all nine matches. Mike Achatz '19 (#7) led the team surrendering just seven points over three games. Ric Yamamoto '19 (#2) kept pace, losing just nine points over his three games. Co-captain Sasha Derby '18 (#3) started slow, winning the first game 12-10, but then improved to prevail 11-5, 11-5 over the last two games. Peter Kim '18 (#8) and Andrew Gingold '21 (#9) each dropped a game in their exhibition match, but both played well and won points at crucial times by combining good serves with superior length.
Girls’ Varsity Squash
Suffield lost a close match to Kingswood-Oxford in their second meeting of the season. The top of the ladder led the way as Tori Tryon ’18 and Tayla Ziadie ’19 both posted decisive 3-0 victories. Seniors Sedley Benitz and Isabella Boonstra had close matches and played well, but ultimately fell in four games. The match of the day came at #7 as sophomore Vivian Riegel found herself down 0-2 and clawed her way back to even the score 2-2. The fifth and deciding game was filled with exciting rallies and great shots until Riegel rattled off some excellent drives to win 3-2. The Tigers are 2-6.
Suffield’s shooters traveled to the Metacom Range in Simsbury to have their second match against the "Winged Beavers" of Avon Old Farms. The Tigers shot very well and matched their previous score against Xavier with another 945. Medalist for Suffield was yet again senior Leticia Sadalini with a very respectable 191. Co-captains Pat Cordes ’18 shot 190 and Matteo Calderan ’18 posted 189. Kari Vinje ’19 earned a top five spot with 188 and Elaine Wang ’19 finished off the top five with a 187. The final score was Suffield 945 and Avon 926. The other four shooters for Suffield included Collin Parrow ’18 with 186, Tim Cordes ’20 with 186, Vaughn Rogers ’19 with 184, and Angela Su ’20 with 176. Suffield’s record is 2-1.
The Tigers came from behind to defeat Avon on the road, 65-60. Jalin Sinclair '20 led the way with 19 points, including 4 threes, while RJ Mhoon '18 followed close behind with 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists. The team is 9-3.
A Suffield team battered of late by illness and injury mustered excellent focus and effort to swim past Hopkins and Westover on January 24. Matt Titterton ’18 (200 free, 100 fly), Max Miranda ’18 (50 free, 100 breast), Shaun Johnson ’18 (100 fly, 100 back), Sydney Winters ’19 (200, 500 free), and Devina Bhalla ’18 (50, 100 free) led Suffield with two wins apiece. A number of the swims were lifetime or season bests. Samantha Hagberg ’20 took the 200 IM with ease and finished in 2nd place in the 100 free. Brett Smith ’20 swam to a very fast 55.65, just hundredths off his PB, to win the event. All of Suffield's relays won, earning them key points. Some of the more impressive relay swims include Marco Secchiaroli's ’20 freestyle swims (50, 100 free), Miranda's fly split, Gavin Mastella's ’19 breast split, Jordan Slade's ’19 50 free leg, and swims by Daisy Fauver ’19 and Abby James ’19 in the medley relay. Major improvements in individual events were posted by Mike Giugliano ’19 (200 IM), Wes Bartlett ’18 (100 free), Mastella (100 breast), Oscar Ceria ’20 (50 free), and Neil Budge ’21 (100 breast). The boys defeated Hopkins 97-85, while the girls bested Westover 63-38 and Hopkins 57-45. The girls are now 2-6 and the boys are 3-4.
