Senior Speakers – February 26
The senior speaker series concluded for the winter term on February 26 and featured seven members of the Class of 2018: Matt McCoy, Andrew Daly, RJ Mhoon, Nick Vardakas, Myles Freeman, Patrick Harding, and Henry Zurkow.
The series launched last year as part of Suffield’s chapel program. All seniors deliver a speech, presentation, or performance to the community. Headmaster Charlie Cahn feels the program serves as a formative experience for the seniors and another opportunity to strengthen community. These talks are supplemented by traditional chapel events including the Alumni Leadership Day program, Student Council Elections, and Kent-Davis Speaking Competition during Commencement week.
A self-proclaimed benchwarmer, Matt McCoy talked about teamwork and his supporting role on the varsity basketball team. Having grown up in Bermuda but with parents from Canada, Andrew Daly spoke about identity: “For most people, the place in which they come from is a source of pride and honor and feeling of belonging.” RJ Mhoon gave a talk about influence and responsibility. “Whether or not we are good or bad role models matters,” he said. “We have the power to determine the destiny of our own lives, but we also have the power to impact other people’s future.” After spending four years on the Tiger 4ths basketball team, Nick Vardakas shared memories of Coach Cleary and the importance of maximum effort. Myles Freeman spoke briefly about his passion for woodworking and presented a slideshow featuring his work. From Fairfield, Connecticut, Patrick Harding explained the difference between attending a single sex day school and a coed boarding school, and why Suffield Academy provides a uniquely positive experience. Finally, from Scarsdale, New York, Henry Zurkov commented on things he learned during a recent trip to Spain. “I realized there was a practical difference in their culture in comparison to ours, with an appreciation for the moment and simple pleasures,” he concluded. “All things considered the trip was a lot of fun and I look forward to traveling more in the future.”
The senior speaker series will resume on April 2. You may view all chapel talks here
