Swimmers Earn Honors at New England Division 1 Championships

Suffield's swimmers earned many honors at the Division 1 Swimming Championships, hosted by Phillips Exeter Academy over the March 3-4 weekend. Leading the way were Sydney Winters '19 and Max Miranda '18 and the girls' two sprint relay quartets, all double winners in the competition. Winters swam to convincing wins in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke. She also swam key legs of the two girls' relays that earned gold. For her achievements, Winters was named the Grace Robertson Award winner by the participating teams' head coaches. The award honors both demonstrated sportsmanship, as well as outstanding performance at the meet. Miranda swam to victory in the 200-yard individual medley and 500-yard freestyle. Already an owner of the 200-yard freestyle New England prep record, Miranda showed his versatility in the I.M., where he narrowly missed the prep record in that event. But in the 500, he did cruise to a new record, eclipsing the previous mark by 2.5 seconds, winning in 4:23.55.
The girls' relay foursomes were comprised of Shaun Johnson '18, Samantha Hagberg '20, Devina Bhalla '18, and Winters. They first swam to within .03 of Suffield's own 2015 New England record in the 200-yard medley relay. Hours later, they crushed Suffield's New England record from 2017 in the 200-yard freestyle relay, establishing a new mark of 1:34. 41. Both relays met automatic All America standards.
Johnson broke her existing school record in the 50-yard freestyle by almost .5, earning her 2nd place in the competition, as well as consideration All-America honors. She finished in 4th place in the 100-yard backstroke.
Other championship finalists include Bhalla (100, 200 freestyle - 4th in both events), Hagberg (200 IM and 100 butterfly, 4th and 6th), CIan Beaulieu '18 (200, 500 freestyle - 3rd in both events), Joe Rusnock '21 (100 breaststroke - 3rd), Marco Secchiaroli '20 (100 backstroke - 6th), and Matt Titterton '18 (500 freestyle - 8th). Titterton was also a consolation final winner in the 200 I.M., and Sophomore Brett Smith won the 100-backstroke consolation final.
Suffield's boys' team finished in 4th place and the girls' team in 5th; these results included the contributions of Suffield's strong diving team.
