Four Tigers Teams Go Undefeated
Four Suffield Academy athletic teams completed their winter seasons with undefeated records: girls’ junior varsity basketball (16-0), boys’ Tiger A basketball (12-0), junior varsity riflery (4-0), and varsity alpine skiing (13-0).
With notable wins over Choate (39-15), Williston (23-14), Hotchkiss (31-14), Berkshire (26-11), and Loomis (27-17) the girls’ junior varsity basketball team had a terrific season. The Tigers played excellent team defense, often resulting in easy scoring opportunities and a lot of points. Coach Gamere ’93 explained, “We had a great season anchored by hard work and cohesive team play. The girls enjoyed playing together and that resulted in a high level of energy on the court. The team played hard and had a lot of fun."
Boys’ Tiger A basketball achieved success in defeating their rivals Westminster (48-24), Loomis (31-18), Williston (55-43), Avon Old Farms (47-44), and Taft (57-39), while narrowly edging out Wilbraham (33-31) and Deerfield (39-37) in close, competitive games.
While the junior varsity riflery team previously filled their season with six regularly scheduled matches, two opposing schools gave up their squads leaving Suffield with just four sharp-shooting match ups.
After a promising season last winter, the alpine ski team sped to victory with dynamic wins over Salisbury, Taft, Loomis, and Berkshire, while placing 1st in the Brigham Ski League Championship and 5th in the NEPSAC Class A Championship. Jack Cobb ’20 finished 4th in slalom and 6th in giant slalom and was named to the All New England League. Coach Cahn ’88 commented, “We managed tough conditions this winter and came away with great times against some very fast athletes. After graduating a few top racers last year, and I am very pleased with how our younger skiers carved out their own success. Suffield’s ski team has a very bright future ahead.”
