We are nearing the middle of spring term and looking forward to seeing many of you on campus next weekend (April 20 and 21). In advance of parents' weekend I wanted to send news from Suffield.
I am pleased to notify you we had outstanding admissions results for the 2018-2019 academic year with our highest-ever first-round yield..This is noteworthy for several reasons including the fact that admission was very selective (nearly ten candidates for each space) and our accepted students had many choices. We had over 50 families at each of the three revisit days, and more than sixty percent of them enrolled at Suffield. We are very pleased with the group of new students joining us in the fall. It will include 85 freshmen, 25 new sophomores, and 10 to 12 new students in grades eleven and twelve. The consistent feedback we received from families was they found our philosophy of rigor, warmth, and encouragement compelling and reflected by everyone they met on campus.
Construction of Memorial Building remains on schedule. It will be a fantastic new academic center. We will happily provide tours of the site during Parents' Weekend. Memorial will house 20 classrooms, an advanced media center, and various departments (English, Languages, Academic Deans, Marketing & Communications, Academic Support, Technology). You can see the construction on our webcam (www.suffieldacademy.org/webcam
Many of our seniors are making final decisions about where they will attend college as the May 1 deadline approaches. Collectively, they sent more than 1,000 applications to nearly 300 schools. Our 122 seniors will enroll at more than 80 colleges and universities, and the list will reflect the talents and diversity of the group. We look forward to sharing that with everyone in May.
Students in our sophomore leadership courses are immersed in community service projects. These include volunteer efforts at local schools, farms, and a memory care and assisted living facility, involvement at Loaves and Fishes and Foodshare, support of Suffield's Emergency Aid, and various efforts on campus such as bottle drives and trail work. The sophomores will share presentations about their projects with our community on May 22.
Our returning students will soon work on course selections for next year. The process begins with recommendations from each of their current teachers and then includes personal meetings with a member of our Academic Deans' Office with follow-up letters to parents. I encourage you to talk with your child about this topic.
Three performances of the award-winning show “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” will take place next month in the Jeanice Seaverns Performing Arts Center (May 17, 18, 19). The production uses various mediums including projection, loud noises, and flashing lights to help illustrate the internal thoughts of a teenage boy with sensory challenges. Other upcoming arts-related events include the spring guitar show (April 27) and the spring performing arts showcase on May 22.
As we look to parents' weekend I want to mention a few items. First, if you plan to attend and have not yet notified us, please contact Kim Goodwin (email@example.com
). Second, several students are organizing an optional event for students and parents to support a nation-wide call to action on April 20 to prevent gun violence in schools. You will hear more details from our student council in the coming days about logistics and how you can participate.
Last, I want to again thank the many parents who have already supported the auction through their time, items, and financial gifts. Proceeds are being directed to a new synthetic turf field inside our track, a project that will greatly benefit our students. If you cannot attend the event you can bid online on the auction website (www.suffieldacademy.org/auction
). Others who cannot be here have generously sent gifts. Tickets are still available for the dinner and the car raffle and you can direct any auction inquiries to Penn Sullivan (firstname.lastname@example.org
Suffield's strength and momentum are evident in all areas of campus life. Thank you for your enthusiastic partnership of all we are doing here.
