Dear Parents,

I wanted to send an update from Suffield as we approach the final week of the winter term. As you know, our students are focused on a variety of end-of-term assignments in lieu of term exams. You will receive winter term grades and comments by March 8. It is hard to believe we will soon be sending details about our May 23-24 Commencement to parents of the Class of 2013.

Tonight is the second performance of this winter's fantastic dance show. It is a spirited, enjoyable performance exhibiting great student talent. Our dancers are joined in several pieces by students in the advanced vocal course.

Several athletic teams are preparing for postseason competition. Suffield is hosting the New England Diving Championship on February 27, and the girls’ and boys’ swim teams will head to the New England Championships at Deerfield next weekend. Among many great swimming performances this season, last week one of our girls' medley relay teams (Pure Maleenont '15, Becca Titterton '15, Hannah Katz '14, and Anna Strzempko '13) beat the Suffield pool record in this event. The squash teams will take part in end-of-season tournaments held at Pomfret (girls) and Avon Old Farms (boys). Our Alpine Ski Team concluded an outstanding season earlier this week with a second place finish in the Brigham Ski League Championship. Prior to this race, the Girls' ski team won the New England Class B Championship at Shawnee Peak in Maine, the first time this has happened in Suffield's storied ski team history. The riflery team is again undefeated and will take part in the state championship on the 27th. Suffield's Wrestling team finished 6th out of 46 teams in last week's New England Championships, with two students (Drew Mahoney '15 and Trent Bellows '15) winning their weight classes. They will be joined this weekend by two other wrestlers (Mike Yerardi '15 and Josh Hillman '14) in the Prep School National Wrestling Tournament at Lehigh. Girls' Basketball concludes their season tomorrow evening, and the boys' team has their final regular season contest against Salisbury. Boys' basketball will continue with tournament play next week. I also want to mention that our subvarsity teams—including our 11-0 Tiger B Boys' Basketball team—have had excellent seasons, making this one of Suffield's most successful winter athletic seasons by any measure.

Monday's chapel speaker, Josh Gunderson, will focus on the pros and cons of social networking. Titled "Hooked on Facebook," Josh will examine some of the dangers of cyberspace and strategies to use these tools in a healthy, useful fashion. The chapel program this winter has been very robust, with seven guest speakers and presentations by student musicians and faculty members. This spring's chapel dates will be filled with guest speakers and school-wide programs including our Earth Day celebration and Alumni Leadership Day.

Our Admissions Office is finalizing first-round decisions, which are sent from Suffield both electronically and by mail on March 10. The pool is again quite strong, with roughly eight applicants for each available space. Thanks to the parents who have offered to make follow-up calls to accepted families. If others would like to help with this, please contact Jeff Depelteau in our Admissions Office (jdepelteau@suffieldacademy.org). Jeff is also focused on enrollment for the Summer Academy at Suffield, which will run from June 30 to August 2. This program includes many current and future Suffield Academy students, and details can be found on our website at http://www.suffieldacademy.org/summer.

Next month you will receive materials related to the spring Parents' Weekend on April 26 and 27. We are adding time this year for all parents to meet with faculty advisors. We are also looking forward to the annual Parents’ Association Auction on the evening of Friday, April 26. This is an important and enjoyable evening for the school. I will share news about the campus projects at the event and hope you can help us by attending and participating. You can learn more about items that have already been donated and get ideas for gifts by visiting the auction website (www.suffieldacademy.org/auction) or by contacting Penn Sullivan, our Auction Coordinator (psullivan@suffieldacademy.org). Thanks to the many parents helping to organize the event, led by co-chairs Mary DeLiso P’13 and trustee Susan Autuori P'06, '08, '10, '13.

This is the final period to place orders for the spring delivery of Suffield Academy school blazers. They feature bold orange and black lining with the Suffield Academy seal and tiger mascot embroidered on the inside. The gold buttons are also embossed with the Suffield Academy seal. More details can be found on our website at http://tinyurl.com/suffieldblazers.

This has been a true New England winter—filled with snow—and our students, faculty, and staff have done great work. I hope you enjoy the March break with your families and look forward to seeing everyone back on campus in late March.
