Head's E-letter Vol XIII issue XVIII

Dear Parents,
As the summer unfolds I wanted to send along some news from Suffield. There is a great deal of activity on campus as we prepare for the 2014-2015 academic year.
Summer Academy is underway and students have joined us from all over the United States and around the world for this five-week program. Several construction projects are also in progress including the major expansion and renovation of Brewster Hall. You can track this on our webcam ( In addition to the work on Brewster, restoration of Fuller Hall's cupola is nearly complete, drainage is being added to athletic fields, and a significant wireless internet project is unfolding. This will bring wireless access to nearly all parts of campus including our dormitories. The project has been made possible through a lead gift from Suffield grandparents Monte and Billie Mayo and George and Kathy Krar, and proceeds from the Fund-a-Need portion of our 2014 Parents' Association Auction.
As we look to the fall, we will have an enrollment of 410 students—our twelfth straight year at this size. Admission to Suffield was again highly selective as over 1,000 students interviewed for the 135 spaces we filled. We will be joined by students from 17 states and 31 countries, with 81 students in grade 9, 36 new sophomores, 9 new juniors, and 10 postgraduates. Interestingly, 94 students are Suffield siblings or legacies, a testament to the strength of the school.
We have several guests set to visit campus this fall to help us explore the 2014-2015 school theme of conviction. Our goal is to use various programs to examine how people form convictions and how they impact our lives. Jamie Ford, the acclaimed author of our community text (Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet), will join us on September 22. Holocaust survivor Marion Blumenthal Lazan will visit the following week and share her unforgettable story of the devastating years that shaped her childhood. On October 6, we will hear from noted writer Tom Clavin (The DiMaggios, Last Men Out, Halsey's Typhoon, The Heart of Everything That Is). I will send more news about chapel speakers throughout the year.
The most up-to-date materials for registration week and beyond are on the Suffield website ( There is also a short video on the site that beautifully captures the spirit of our 2014 commencement activities (
I want to send thanks to everyone that helped us achieve our ambitious goals for the 2013-2014 Annual Fund. These resources supplement tuition and help make possible everything we do at Suffield. In addition to meeting our financial goals, the 90% parent participation and 40% alumni participation figures are particularly noteworthy and symbolic of the wide support of the extended Suffield Academy community. Our sincere appreciation goes to all of those who helped with this ambitious and successful effort.
Next month I will share additional news about the upcoming school year including profiles of the seven new members of our faculty. In the meantime, I send all best wishes from Suffield.
