Summer Sabbaticals: Andy Lowe and Tom Gotwals
Andy Lowe and Tom Gotwals recently took advantage of Suffield's summer sabbatical grants for faculty to work on meaningful projects. They spoke about these experiences at chapel on April 13. Andy Lowe visited Thailand and Japan during the March vacation. He showed pictures of his travels and talked about the variety of transportation methods and the history of religious artifacts in each place. Pointing to a picture of a water taxi, he joked, "Seniors, this is what you can get me for graduation." Mr. Lowe, who has gone abroad roughly 25 times, encouraged students to travel as much as possible and emphasized the importance of keeping it simple.
Music teacher Tom Gotwals began his chapel presentation with a solo piano performance. He explained how he spent his summer digitizing his music theory materials. With colleague Beth Bailey's help, Tom was able to convert many of his sheet music to pdfs. He ended his presentation with a jazz performance that also included staff members Bill Arnold and Jeff Giglio.
