Dear Parents,
As the summer unfolds I wanted to send along some news from Suffield. There is a great deal of activity on campus as we prepare for the 2015-2016 academic year.
Summer Academy is underway and 120 students from all over the United States and around the world are here for this five-week program. Several construction projects are also in progress, most notably the major expansion of Brewster Hall and conversion of Stiles Lane into a central campus walkway. You can track this on our webcam (http://web.suffieldacademy.org/webcam). Crews are working long shifts to try and meet our completion target of early September.
As we look to the fall, our enrollment rests at 412 students—our thirteenth straight year around this size. Admission to Suffield was again highly selective as over 1,050 students applied for the 139 spaces we filled. As of today we will be joined by students from 20 states and 34 countries, with 81 students in grade nine, 27 new sophomores, 16 new juniors, and 12 postgraduates.
We are working on several plans to help explore the 2015-2016 school theme of balance. We will use various programs to examine strategies that enhance steadiness and stability. Our essential goal is to see how balance can lead to clarity and success. Our community text (Boys in the Boat) will be a helpful vehicle in initiating discussion of the topic.
The most up-to-date materials for registration week and beyond are on the Suffield website (www.suffieldacademy.org/studentforms). There is also a short video on the site that beautifully captures the spirit of our 2015 commencement activities (www.suffieldacademy.org/commencement).
I want to thank everyone that helped us achieve our ambitious goals for the 2014-2015 Annual Fund. These resources supplement tuition and help make possible everything we do at Suffield. In addition to meeting our financial goals, the 87% parent participation, 42% alumni participation, and 100% faculty participation figures are noteworthy and symbolic of the wide support of the extended Suffield Academy community. Our sincere appreciation goes to all of those who helped with this ambitious and successful effort. I am pleased to mention that additional gifts for construction projects and the endowment made this the most successful fundraising year in school history.
Next month I will share additional news about the upcoming academic year including profiles of the seven new members of our faculty. You will also be receiving preliminary academic schedules and book ordering information in August. In the meantime, I send all best wishes from Suffield.
