A native of West Hartford, Connecticut, Jonathan worked at both boarding and day schools prior to coming to Suffield in 2004. He has been a teacher, coach, athletic director, and dorm parent. Jonathan graduated from Trinity College in Hartford, was a four-year letterman on the lacrosse team, and also earned a master’s degree in American Studies. Prior to Trinity, he attended Middlesex School in Concord, Massachusetts, and Renbrook School in West Hartford. Jonathan lives in West Hartford with his wife Allison, daughter Hadley, and son Oliver.
Aside from teaching and coaching, Jonathan’s passions include playing golf, gardening, going to the beach, spending time and playing with family, and dreaming of a return of his beloved Hartford Whalers. He also enjoys trips to Maine during the summer, and visiting family in Kentucky. Jonathan teaches mathematics and coaches girls’ junior varsity soccer and boys’ junior varsity squash.
Emily Balaban-Garber joined Suffield’s Department of Languages in 2011 as a Spanish teacher. Emily is a native of Orono, Maine, and a graduate of Bowdoin College. In 2009, she studied in Salamanca, Spain. She has done a considerable amount of community service work through mentoring young students and at-risk adults. She loves to travel and snowboard in the winter. In addition to her teaching, Emily coaches girls’ junior varsity soccer and softball. She is also the head of the Jewish Organization of Suffield Academy, and the dorm head in Tompkins where she lives with her dog Oliver.
