The goal of the program is to be as competitive as possible while supporting anyone who wants to play across all ability levels. Students who play varsity upon entering Suffield usually have prior squash experience, though talented tennis players have been able to successfully transition to the game at the varsity level. The team strives for the best record against the best competition while upholding the highest standards of sportsmanship and respectful competition.
The JV team stresses the fundamental skills of the game as well as the lifelong nature and lessons of the sport such as sportsmanship, fitness, and competitive camaraderie. The most experienced and seasoned JV players often make the jump to the varsity squad after a few seasons of training.
Team History: A New Tradition
The Suffield boys squash program has built a strong tradition in just two decades. During this brief history, the team has qualified for the "A" tournament twice (2006 & 2015-16), finished second in the "B" tournament three times (2007, 2008, & 2019), and won the "C" tournament (2012).
The Suffield boys’ varsity squash team competes against many of the strongest programs in western New England, including Loomis Chaffee, Berkshire, Avon Old Farms, and Salisbury. The Tigers are always looking for the most challenging opponents they can find. Though the Tigers are among the newer members of the New England Prep squash landscape, they have performed admirably since arriving and have notched team victories over perennial powers Deerfield, Loomis Chaffee, Hotchkiss, Avon, Salisbury and Westminster among others, in recent years.
Some recent Suffield squash alumni have played competitively at the college level. Suffield players have competed for Cornell, Dartmouth, St. Lawrence, George Washington, Bates, Colby and F & M as well as other college programs, and a few have gone on to coach at the college and club levels after their playing days concluded.
The 2018-19 team finished second in the New England B Tournament and was in the running to win the event well into the final day. Having graduated five seniors from the squad that posted this promising result, the 2018-19 team is hoping its returning core of young players can
maintain the momentum. Senior Judge Burke, who won the #7 flight in last year’s B tournament, will provide the senior leadership for this year’s team. The top of the ladder will be anchored by Marwan El-Bendary ‘21, who wan the #3 flight in last year’s tournament. along with new junior Omar Zakaria. The rest of the ladder could be fluid and will be decided on a weekly basis via challenge matches. Several equally matched players with varsity experience are in the mix, including Andrew Gingold, Elm Piyasombatkul, & Jangmin Song, A few members of last year’s JV team could crack the top nine as well.
